Often times, I don’t really know where to start. Today is one of those days.

Generally, I know what I want to say but transferring it from my head to my computer is where the challenge comes in.

Usually in these cases I just start typing and see where it leads.

Last week, I was having a conversation with a friend who was helping me with some of my marketing and promotional materials.

All of my resources are, for the most part, my own creation through trial and error.

It is this way for a couple of reasons.

First, I don’t have much money to invest into these things at this point.

Secondly, and this is the real crux of this post, is that I don’t like to ask for help.

I had met this friend, who was reviewing my materials with me, for lunch. He offered to help. Even though it was hard to accept, I accepted it knowing that my materials really aren’t where I would like them to be.

As we closed our Google Hangout conversation, my very first ever, I thanked him for what he had done for me in our conversation.

He responded with something like this, “You know, Dave, we all need a team to help us be successful and I’m happy to be a small part of your team because I know you make a difference in the lives of others.”

As a guy who struggles to ask for help and feels I have to do it on my own that statement hit me like a smack upside the head.

As I have worked to grow my business I often read about how others have grown their businesses of all kinds.

Virtually all of them talk about the importance of having a team around you to help you develop in your weak areas and to help you to see what you don’t.

While I know I need to ask for help, I rarely do.

As is often the case, when I am struck by something it reappears within a short period of time to reinforce what I need to work on.

Some might see this as coincidence. I see it as the Holy Spirit nudging me to action. I just need to be a better listener.

The day after my Google Hangout with my friend, I read an e-mail from another friend that I had had for a few days but was waiting to open it when I had a little more time.

This friend has been a great encouragement to me as I build my business as well and often has some great nuggets he shares with me. This was no exception.

He forwarded me this article from Andy Andrews on 13 Little Things Successful Leaders Wished They’d Learned Sooner.

Number 5 on this list came from John Jantsch, the founder of Duct Tape Marketing.

John’s pearl says this; Ask for help (And be willing to receive it.)

Smack  #2 came before I had recovered from smack  #1!

The last line in Jantsch’s little blurb says; Ask for help, be helpless, and activate the helpfulness in others.

I have not doubt people would be willing to help me if I just gave them the chance.

Which leads me to smack #3.

In scrolling through my Facebook feed one day I ran across a post from someone recommending watching The Kindness Diaries on Netflix. I read the blurb and it sounded interesting but didn’t give it much thought.

A short time later I was out running some errands and listening to sports talk on the car radio.

One of the talking heads brought up The Kindness Diaries and couldn’t stop talking about it.

Smack #3 says watch The Kindness Diaries. So I did.

The series is a documentary of a British man traveling from Los Angeles around the world on his motorcycle.

That in itself is interesting until you find out that he is traveling around the world with absolutely no money and relying on the kindness of strangers for everything, gas, food, and lodging.

He, seemingly, has no problem asking complete strangers for help.

The help he receives from people is simply amazing and he gets the help he needs simply by asking.

It takes courage to ask for help. To date, I have not developed a great deal of courage in this particular area. I will be working on this.

Do you have the courage to ask others for help?

Do you have the courage to allow others to activate their helpfulness?

What help will you ask for from someone today?
